Brief DVD rundown for the past week
LIVING IN OBLIVION 5/5 Great movie about making movies, Steve Buscemi is awesome. Nice touches in the script, love the fact that it's only three scenes, it's all so fucking true.
ROBOCOP 4/5 Surprisingly good and intelligent as well as being ultraviolent. I loves me some Peter Weller. Nice satire/dystopic future setting.
AMERICAN HISTORY X 5/5 Excellent film, probably more something you appreciate rather than like, it being so dark. Gorgeously shot. Norton is fantastic. Contains violence more shocking than most splatter films I've seen. Avery Brooks!
VIDEODROME 4/5 Very, very good ideas in this - the merging of flesh and technology, the linking of sex and violence. James Woods = good. His assistant seems to be doing a Jeff Combs impression. Nice makeup and stuff but the plot is perhaps a little TOO obtuse. Even with the hallucination stuff I lost track of it at the end. But hey, it's Cronenberg.
DAY OF THE DEAD 2/5 Seen it before, it was worse the second time. Worth seeing for the look into how zombies work, Dr. Logan, Bub, and the fucking awesome makeup effects. Otherwise it's cartoonish and amateurish.
CANNIBAL! THE MUSICAL 3/5 Very low-budget and it shows, but it pulls off its South Park-esque humour (duh). Some really good songs, and a bloody brilliant scene with a guy who just won't die. Unfortunately it's all made up of brilliant moments and it doesn't really gel together as a film.
Fuck. I said "gel".
