What a busy two days.
Final day of printmaking: one word - FINALLY. Out of the MFing junkpile room! No more charcoal! Agh, it feels good, yes it does. Finished six sort-of OK drawings. Not as good as my painting work but still OK, I guess. Not that the marks matter that much. Getting design marks next week. So it's a 4+ for film, 3 for painting. Anyway.
Mission: Impossible 3 - very, very good. And not just in a "cool" way either. It was a genuinely good movie, with some good performances, dialogue and some expertly-executed setpieces. The sequence in the Vatican in particular reminded me of why spy movies are so fantastically great. Suspenseful and taut. Side note: I don't get all the bullshit surrounding Tom Cruise. My opinion of him is strictly limited to his onscreen appearances (in movies, not Oprah). And in that respect he's not too badly off. Brando he is not, but he's such a great movie STAR, he can carry a movie really well. And M:i:III was good. I'm glad the writer/director is doing the next Trek film.
Party for Norry - orange. Very orange. Nice to get so many people together again. Yeah, not much to say except it was a good night pretty much. Sorry to be seeing Norris go, though.
The Matador - VASTLY overrated. Some good one-liners from Pierce Brosnan (and a fairly good performance from him overall, though he did tend to slip into self-parody reminiscent of recent De Niro movies) but it's just got so much Hollywood bullshit schmaltz buddy shit that I was seriously considering walking out. Only worth seeing for Brosnan talking about how good cock tastes.
Christ's College short film "Fill 'Er Up" - too well-done. I mean that in the sense that it's so obvious that the professional "tutors" took over that it's just like, the students didn't get a look in. The fact that it was done with crane shots, dolly shots, etc...it's just all too "nice" looking. The lighting is TOO slick - for example, when Patrick Duffy's lying beaten up, he allegedly had good bruising makeup (according to him) but the lighting blew it all out. When you want something to look ugly, you don't light it like that. Also more could've been done with the acid trip, made more accurate, more affecting, etc. Some nice trademark Matt Ward grimacing. Dominic was alright. But yeah, too much interference.
Scared Scriptless - FUCKING GOOD. One of the best I've ever seen. Totally went off. Gareth's first night was fantastic, he had a few moments that just ruled, notably the Howzat Dance (credit also to Dan A for inventing that game, which I suspect will make a return at some point). So, yeah.
Hairy Nobs Album #3 = 10 songs out of 12 finished. The other 2 have lyrics, one of them also has a rough musical framework. Looking good.
